Kaya Goban

Kaya Go board 6.0cm

This is a real Kaya Go board made from the finest cut of Japanese Kaya wood from southern Japan. The size of this board measures: 45.9cm x 43.0cm x 6.0cm. The board is made up of three pieces of Kaya stock, joined together seamlessly. If you look closely the seam is directly under the lines. As for the lines, they are hand drawn with the use of a Samurai sword blade, so they will not have a cheap stenciled look to them. The ink used is a Japanese lacquer that is also used on the very expensive Urushi bowls/plates. As for the finish, the board is polished with Japanese Sumac wax to give it a beautiful finish. This truly is the ultimate Go board. The beauty of this wood and the solid sound of stones being placed on the board will bring a whole new enjoyment to the game. Also included are: 1/8 inch thick felt pad sized to fit the go board (protects the bottom of the go board and enhances the sound when placing stones on the board, brings out the true sound of the Kaya), and also a polishing towel to care for the surface.

Kaya - also Hyuga Kaya and Hon Kaya (Torreya nucifera):

This is a slow-growing coniferous tree primarily found in southern Japan. This wood is considered to be the best, and is the most expensive option for Go boards. The trees used are often up to 700 years old. The wood contains much oil and has a beautiful smell. The grain is very distinct as it is grown in places where there is great variation between day and night temperature. It has very dense grain due to it growing slowly in rock places. Click Here,
